Hot Spring (Onsen) Report
FUMOTO RYOKAN, located in the center of the Kurokawa hot spring area, uses only free-flowing natural hot spring water in all of its baths. Free-flowing natural hot spring water means, in other words, that the source is poured into the bathtub once and the overflowing water is discarded. There is a well-thought-out device in the inn. The hot spring used at this inn is jointly managed by several inns. The temperature of the fountainhead is an extremely high 95.8°C. To bathe at the adequate temperature, one must add water to the hot spring to dilute it or reduce the volume of water poured into the bathtub to an extremely low level. Adding water weakens the components of the hot spring water, and if the volume of water is low, the frequency of hot water replacement is poor, making it impossible to bathe in a sanitary manner. Therefore, the ideal condition of free-flowing hot spring water is achieved by lowering the temperature through heat exchange between this hot spring and the private hot spring (60.5°C) located in the sister ryokan, Ryokan Kounoyu. They go to great lengths to ensure that people enjoy hygienic and fresh hot springs. The Spring Quality is "Sodium Chloride Sulfate Hot Springs". It is expected to have the double effect of being a Chloride Springs (salt spring) and a Sulfate Spring (sodium sulfate spring). The unique indications of this hot spring are Cuts, Peripheral circulatory disturbance, Sensitivity to cold, Depression, Dry skin. The Chloride Spring is commonly referred to as "Hot spring for warmth". The salt content in the water blocks the sweat glands, which helps to raise the deep body temperature, and the feeling of a warm body after bathing lasts longer. Although sensitivity to cold is an indication that applies to other types of springs as well, the chloride spring is particularly effective. It is also known as "Hot Spring for cuts" due to the bactericidal effect of the salinity of the spring. Sulfate Springs are thought to be particularly effective in treating hypertension, arteriosclerosis, and traumatic injuries when combined with sodium ions. Furthermore, because of its skin reviving effects (it stimulates the elasticity of the skin and prevents wrinkles), it is sometimes called "Hot spring for anti-aging" or "Hot spring for rejuvenation". These effects make sulfate spring water one of the conditions for being called a "Hot spring for beauty". The spring contains 305.9 mg of metasilicic acid per kilogram of spring water, more than six times the standard value (50 mg/kg) that qualifies it as a "hot spring". Metasilicic acid is a natural moisturizing component that is sometimes used as an ingredients in some cosmetics. After taking a bath, you will have moist skin. This is one of the conditions for the hot water to be called "Hot spring for beauty". It also contains 32.2 mg/kg of metaboric acid, more than six times the standard value (5 mg/kg). It has a cleansing effect on the skin and is expected to be effective in treating acne. Lithium ions are also of note, with a value of more than 1 mg/kg passing the "hot spring" standard. It is said to have antidepressant effects. The hot spring is neutral with a pH of 6.7. It is a low-irritant hot spring that does not depend on who is soaking in it. You can stay overnight and enjoy the hot spring baths within the inn. It is also a good place to stop by as a break from touring the hot springs of Kurokawa Onsen area, as it is a highly effective hot spring for calming the skin.
Private bath "Tachiyu" | Open-air bath "Momiji-no-Yu" |
---|---|
It is the largest of the private baths. The depth increases as you move from the front to the back, reaching a maximum depth of 150 centimeters, and you can stretch your legs by holding onto the wooden pillar in the center. Stretching your arms and legs to the fullest in a natural, comfortable posture puts no strain on your back or knees. | The open-air bath "Momiji-no-Yu" is basically for men, but from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. it is for women only. Bathing while listening to the murmuring of the Tanohara River that flows below the open-air bath will provide a strong tipping point effect. |
Private bath "Ichi-no-Yu" | Private bath "Go-no-Yu" |
The bathtub is constructed of stone and stands on a slope, providing an excellent view. It is interesting to note that the thriving trees provide just the right amount of shade. | The private baths are full of the atmosphere of the outdoors. Although not as large as the standing baths, small groups can enjoy a relaxing soak in the baths. Of course, the source of the water is free-flowing. |
Facility Report
Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto Prefecture is now playing a textbook role for all hot spring areas in Japan. Although it is a small hot spring resort located in the mountains, the individuality of each hot spring area is not compromised, and yet the overall impression of the hot spring area is one of uniformity.
As a finishing touch, Kurokawa Onsen sold "Onsen hopping pass" that allowed visitors to bathe in three baths for the purchase of one bill, and led visitors to tour the entire hot spring area while wearing yukata, which became very popular.
The entire town was captured as a single onsen ryokan, giving it a sense of unity, which won the sympathy of onsen fans.
It was the president and landlady of Fumoto Ryokan who came up with the idea for the "Onsen hopping pass", which is now commonplace in hot spring areas throughout Japan.
The inn is located on Kawabata-dori, the main street of Kurokawa Onsen, and has a total of 17 baths (2 open-air baths for men and women, 11 private baths including open-air baths, 3 open-air guest baths, and 1 footbath) for a total of 14 guest rooms, making it a true department store of hot springs.
The guest rooms are mainly rustic Japanese-style rooms, but there is also a guest room with an open-air bath and a bed in the annex.
The cuisine includes Kumamoto's famous horse sashimi and Higo beef, and is reasonably priced, so everything is highly rated.
You can truly feel the reason for the nationwide popularity of Kurokawa Onsen at this inn.
